Abstract

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the global education system underwent a sudden transformation towards virtual education. This led to rapid adaptation of teachers to online classes, along with training in virtual technologies and platforms. Engineering courses were also affected, generating difficulties and sometimes demotivation in both students and teachers, which led to high student dropout at all levels of education. To address this problem, in this study new online teaching strategies were implemented to increase motivation and effective learning in students. An LMS-type virtual platform is presented that incorporates the theory of learning styles in the delivery of problems and academic activities in a Mechanics of Materials course for students at the University of Medellín-Colombia in 2020. The results of this new strategy Positive results are shown during the development of the course by students, reducing academic loss and student dropout. Furthermore, these new academic strategies applied to technological tools manage to improve the appropriation of knowledge by students and meet the course objectives in a virtual education environment.
