    Description

The early industrialization process in Medellin meant, apart from the 1920s, new reconfigurations of the urban space to respond to the resource and labor needs of the nascent companies. Another of the changes presented was the emergence of a proletariat made up of peasants, mostly women, who lacked fewer opportunities in the rural sector. The industrial development that the city experienced not only favored economic growth, but also gave rise to new forms of relationship between employers and workers. It presented an economic modernization marked by technological advances, but with a lag in political and cultural transformations. For the city of Medellin, this process became evident in the 1920s, consolidating itself in the following decade as a result of business expansion. Methodologically, the project takes as its main unit of analysis the industrial selector, specifically the Coltejer textile company in the period 1930 to 1970. The research problem is focused on the modernizing representations of the Antioquia business elite and how they were reflected in the organization of work inside the factory, in the strategies of discipline and social control of the workers, as well as in their perceptions of social protest. In this scenario, the role played by sports practices in the modernization process emerges as another axis of analysis. In this sense, the project proposes as an objective the analysis of the modernizing practices of the employer elite of the Coltejer textile company and its relationship with the transformations in the forms of work and the social and sports configurations in Medellín between 1930 and 1970. This project takes the company Coltejer as its central unit of analysis for two main reasons. In the first place, due to the availability and access to the company's archive sources at the time studied. Secondly, because Coltejer was a pioneer company in organizational models and in the incorporation of new technologies. So much so, in the 1940s, it became a leading company in the Colombian industrial sector. And although the study period appears extensive at first glance, its selection is due to the fact that it allows addressing the transformations of the aforementioned lines of analysis, where Coltejer is the center of the analysis to understand dynamics external to the factory, but directly related to her as it is the sport and the union mobilizations. In addition, in methodological terms, the research will not be guided by the historical study of the entire period, and much less will it resort to a linear analysis of events. In line with the above, it seeks to contribute with interpretive readings of the period focused on the impact of technology in the world of work and sports as a central element in modernizing processes. It is expected that the results of the research will allow, in the medium term, the consolidation of a transdisciplinary research network that consolidates research proposals compared with other companies in Medellín and Vallé de Aburrá, as an input that allows contributing to the understanding of the complexities and challenges present in the employer-worker relationship and in the labor market, as a result of technological impacts. What can shed light on the current conditions when the city of Medellín is projected as a laboratory of the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0. From another perspective, the interpretative axis proposed here seeks in the long term to contribute to the construction of historical stories that narrate Medellín. from its entrepreneurial capacity, social mobilization and sports entrepreneurship, as opposed to a history of a city based on armed violence and the illegal economy of drug trafficking, which continues to be a global tourist product.

    Expected results

It seeks to contribute with interpretive readings of the period focused on the impact of technology in the world of work and sports as a central element in modernizing processes. From another point of view, the interpretative axis proposed here seeks in the long term to contribute to the construction of historical stories that narrate Medellín from its entrepreneurial capacity, social mobilization and sports entrepreneurship, as opposed to a history of a city thought from armed violence and the illegal economy of drug trafficking, which continues to be a world tourism product.
