Project Details
Description
The initial interest of this research is to analyze the media skills of teachers and students in Latin America with emphasis on the countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Argentina. The research is also interested in deepening and revising the term of media competence, taking into account the continuous and modern processes of interaction that arise daily and that provide diverse experiences of consumption and participation to citizens in a comprehensive manner. From the field of communication we are interested in carrying out a study that allows us to make a description of media competence in the consumption, production and prosumption of social media YouTube and Instagram, given the relevance and influence of these communicative, educational and participation practices. in today's society.
Objective
Objectives General objective: Investigate media competence in Latin American university students and professors in social media: YouTube and Instagram and their use in the educational context. Specific objectives: 1. Know the theoretical approaches and existing studies on media competences in order to establish specific analysis criteria and support for research. 2. Develop a quantitative measurement instrument to measure media skills using the dimensions promoted by Joan Ferrés and Alejandro Piscitelli (2012) as a support base. 3. Assess media competence in students and teachers (separately) in the consumption, production and prosumption of the social media YouTube and Instagram, given the relevance and influence of these communicative, educational and participatory practices in today's society. 4. Make a comparative analysis with the results obtained from the study population from Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Argentina.
Expected results
1. From a theoretical perspective, we consider it extremely important that researchers in social communication and related areas interested in the field of education mediated by modern technologies continue to investigate the way in which these new forms of socialization can contribute to the academic development of students. university students. Numerous studies on media competence have been focused on explaining the term media competence or proposing explanations that can help understand the way in which the identification of media competences in teachers can help in the process of training students, but without necessarily addressing the social networks that will be the object of analysis in this research: You Tube and Instagram (González and Gutiérrez, 2017; Fernández, 2016; Ferrari, 2013; Gutiérrez 2003; Duncan, 1989). The integration of the social networks You Tube and Instagram to the study is one of the significant contributions of this project, since the results can support the theoretical analyzes already carried out by other researchers. 2.From a methodological perspective, there is an opportunity to delve into quantitative studies on media competence that attend population samples of Latin American teachers and students with an emphasis on higher education institutions. In addition, the development of measurement instruments that consider the social networks You Tube and Instagram and can be scientifically validated is considered important. Given that it is intended to develop and scientifically validate a quantitative measurement instrument to measure the media skills of the population under study, it is expected that this will serve as a basis for the development of similar prospective studies. On the other hand, the methodology that will be proposed could be replicated in future studies that contemplate within their objectives the analysis of Latin American populations and the use of the social networks You Tube and Instagram in the university academic context. 3. Regarding The practical justification The results can help in the future development of strategies or pedagogical models that allow the effective use of the social networks You Tube and Instagram in the university academic context and development of knowledge. This, in turn, can serve as support for organizations or research networks such as ALFAMED, whose central research topic is media competence, to continue contributing to the discussion and substantive understanding of the subject, supported by rigorous research such as the one proposed and in the findings that emanate from it. Finally, the results can help the participating universities and their research groups related to the field of communication to strategically address and promote the issue of media skills due to their possible implications in the teaching-learning process. * committed products: 1 ISI WOS or Scopus accepted article, 2 book chapters and 3 presentations at a scientific event (the three have a delivery date of 06-30-2021)
